TALALLA

On the Sun kissed Southern coast of Sri Lanka is a village by the sea, as yet mostly passed over by tourists on their way to better-known haunts. It is a quiet place, where the typical rhythms of village life continue as they have for many years. Serenity reigns as the golden sand reaches out to the sea.

Approximately 12 kilometres from Matara in the direction of Hambantota, Talalla is accessible via the Southern Highway, and makes a great place from which to tour other areas such as the Uda Walawe National Park, Yala National Park, Kataragama, Mulkirigala, and hot water wells at SuriyaWewa, the Waulpane Caves – all sites of natural, archaeological and cultural interest. An easy 2.5 hour drive from the capital, Colombo, its location near the developing city of Hambantota which houses an airport and seaport, couples its nearness to the untouched natural environs with an element of convenience – a getaway without the isolation.

Those who have visited Talalla speak of its understated beauty, shallow waters, and natural reefs where marine life thrives. Deep sea fishing is a favourite pastime, as is exploring shipwrecks and watching whales, in addition to water sports. A series of lagoons along the coastline offer the opportunity to observe the distinctive and vivid biodiversity of the Sri Lankan coast: a paradise for birdwatchers. Talalla is an idyllic setting in which to discover nature’s treasures – and rediscover oneself.
